Counseling Sessions for Anger Management
What is anger?
- Anger is a normal and healthy human emotion. We usually feel it in situations of frustration, hurt, threat, or injustice. However, if anger gets out of control or becomes destructive, it can lead to serious problems in personal relationships, at work, and in other aspects of life.
- Anger management aims to help individuals deal with the root causes of anger and to help them express anger in a mature and acceptable manner.
Why are some people more angry than others?
- One common reason is that we were never taught how to handle anger or channel it constructively. Research also shows that family background and childhood experiences play a role. Typically, people who are easily angered come from families that lack harmony and are not skilled at emotional communications.
What are some ways to deal with anger?
Some people choose to ignore or bottle up anger. This is an unhealthy approach because the root problems are never addressed.
Other effective ways to deal with anger include relaxation and breathing exercises, positive thinking, problem-solving, stress management, and learning to talk about feelings.
It is also good to realize that you can't eliminate anger-- that as long as we live, there will be experiences of frustration, pain, and loss. However, we can always choose the way we respond to such experiences.
When do you need counseling?
If you feel that your anger is really out of control, if it is having an impact on your relationships and on important parts of your life, you might consider counseling to learn how to handle it better.
